Advancing Mental Health Care in CNY

St. Joseph’s Health Behavioral Health Groundbreaking

On October 8, 2026, shovels went into the ground on the renovation of the inpatient psychiatric unit at St. Joseph’s Health in Syracuse. The Hayner Hoyt team joined St. Joseph’s leadership, the state Office of Mental Health and Department of Health, and community partners to celebrate the start of a project that will expand and modernize behavioral health care in Central New York.

A New Space Designed Around Patients and Staff

This $16.4 million project, funded 100% by a state grant, will renovate and reorganize the hospital’s inpatient psychiatric unit. The new layout is designed to accommodate up to 30 patients, with 22 single rooms and four double rooms across the first and second floors. It will increase inpatient capacity, add more private rooms, and improve safety for patients and staff.

The additional private rooms are an exciting step forward. Single rooms offer patients more privacy and dignity, create a calmer setting that supports recovery, and give clinicians greater flexibility in caring for each person. Paired with a centralized layout, the new unit is designed to provide a safer, more therapeutic environment for patients and the dedicated staff who care for them.

Why This Work Matters in Central New York

Access to quality behavioral health care is more important than ever in our region. St. Joseph’s is the only hospital in Central New York with a Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, which makes the inpatient unit an essential part of the area’s care network. The hospital is also investing in the people behind that care, having recently gained formal accreditation for a new psychiatry residency program that will train physicians in settings that include its inpatient unit and psychiatric emergency program.

A Partnership More Than 23 Years in the Making

Hayner Hoyt has partnered with St. Joseph’s Health for more than 23 years, and we are grateful for the trust they continue to place in our team. Projects like this one are a reminder of why we do what we do: building spaces that support healing in our community.

One of my first projects as a Project Manager was building a data center in the basement of this same building we are expanding and renovating 23+ years later. It is truly rewarding to enjoy relationships that have spanned decades with a wonderful partner like St. Joseph’s Health.
