2019 Build New York Awards
Congratulations to Colgate University and the Benton Hall project team on winning a Build NY Award!
Benton Hall is part of a $60 million building investment meant to enhance the student experience. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects with The Hayner Hoyt Corporation serving as the Construction Manager at Risk, the 17,600 square foot LEED Platinum facility is the new home of the Center for Career Services and the Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships.
Servicing thousands of students each year, the new building offers advanced video conferencing capabilities to connect with alumni all over the world and features advisement, employer relations, and interview suites, along with administrative offices and flexible common areas suitable for networking events, academic classes, seminars, lectures, and performances. The attention to detail in the building design is apparent. The Academic Quad entrance boasts an ornate vestibule and a welcoming reception area. With high-end finishes throughout, Hayner Hoyt carpenters performed all millwork, including the installation of a decorative three-piece crown molding. Dark granite stairs complemented by brass handled railings, coffered ceilings, recessed lighting and concealed door openers all work to create a space that is both functional and beautiful.
The building may look as if it has already stood the test of time, but it claims the ultimate in modern building materials. The exterior is comprised of a fluid membrane, layers of foam and fiberglass insulation, and then finished with bluestone and cast stone. The name of the game is energy efficiency. Offset by special triple-pane windows from Germany, the facility implements a steam and chilled water heating and cooling system accompanied by an energy recovery ventilation system that preconditions the air.
